Sarah’s Story: “I wanted to ask him if he confused me with a dog, since they’re the only creature on earth who would be attracted to a guy making kissing sounds…”
I should start by saying that this happened outside a day-shelter for homeless folks, so there are always lots of people around. But I have never had a single bad experience before today (even the guy who offered to sell me crack once was respectful and polite). But this morning at the crosswalk, a guy did the smoochy sounds and asked me how it was going. I wanted to ask him if he confused me with a dog, since they’re the only creature on earth who would be attracted to a guy making kissing sounds. I thought about flicking him off. But I didn’t do either. There were a bunch of other guys there, watching; I was keenly aware that I was pretty severely outnumbered if things escalated. So instead I waved him off with my hand and ignored him and walked away. Instead of saying something to his face, I’m saying something here. I also posted about it on facebook, where a really good discussion has cropped up.
